New Obsessions

I let another month pass without writing anything on this blog… I would apologize, but COLLEGE, YO. Things get so busy, so quickly. I haven’t even exercised all semester (heh let’s be real I don’t really exercise anyway, but still). But since the semester started, I’ve gained a whole new slew (always thought that was such a weird word, I just think of stew) of obsessions, as if I didn’t have enough things I’m obsessed with. Since there are a bunch of new things I’m obsessed with, this is going to be more of a comprehensive list than a paragraph-type article/blog.

  1. Vlogs – So I’ve always watched a couple of vloggers pretty regularly since high school, like Charlie McDonnell and Alex Day, and I went through a phase in freshman year when I was obsessed with youtube musicians like David Choi, Kina Grannis and Conor Maynard. But these past few months, I’ve gotten really obsessed with a lot more people on youtube. My subscription list is getting ridiculously long. In fact, I just went to check my subscriptions list and it literally said “99+”. Oops… so here’s some of my favorite YouTubers, and why:Image
    Boyce Avenue:
Ok, yeah, I know they’ve been around forever, and everyone knows them, but I just want to give them a shout out. I had heard about these guys for years before actually taking the time to check them out. Let me preface my thoughts by saying that I have a lot of issues with other certain YouTube musicians because a lot of them tend to overproduce all of their songs and you lose a lot of the raw, real music in the performance. I won’t name any names because that’s so unnecessary and also just mean, but the point is, I kind of unfairly lumped Boyce Avenue in that category for a while before really listening to them. I am newly obsessed with them now, because I’ve now seen how they take every song that they cover and really add their own personality and make it their own. They have a knack for taking a song and adding extra depth, and they also have a knack for taking a song that I previously hated and making me love it. Perfect example: their acoustic cover of Miley Cyrus’ We Can’t Stop.

Lindsey Stirling: She’s also been around for a while, and I’ve been really into her and Tyler Ward for a while, but just today I watched like five of her videos in a row. I’m obsessed with her arrangements of video game scores, because they’re all GORGEOUS and she also wears awesome costumes and plays her heart out on that beautiful violin. She plays with so much character and passion, it’s just so fun to watch. Something else I love about Lindsey Stirling, along with people like the PianoGuys and Kevin Olusola (more on him later), is that they all represent a revolution in popular music. They’re all taking classical music, and classical music, and fusing it with today’s hits. These musicians are helping today’s generation appreciate the beauty of classical instruments, instead of letting them fade into the background with the emergence of dubstep music and the like. That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy that kind of music too, but I’m just so grateful that Lindsey Stirling and others are keeping the appreciation of classical music alive. Plus, when she did that cover of Radioactive by the Imagine Dragons in a collab with Pentatonix I just about died. Pretty sure I’ve seen that video about thirty times. No shame. I’m also OBSESSED with her arrangement of the score from Legend of Zelda. It’s STUNNING and she looks adorable.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3KUyPKbR7Q

Yeah okay I’m including the Pentatonix/Lindsey Radioactive cover because it’s just FLAWLESS and the whole world needs to see it.

    Laci Green
    Laci Green:
Moving away from musicians for a second, I’m just absolutely obsessed with this woman. She’s pretty high on my girl crush list, forreal. Along with just being absolutely gorgeous, she’s eloquent and her channel is making a huge difference for so many people everywhere. Laci Green represents a revolution in the world of sex education. She’s taking topics that were considered completely taboo, and so stigmatized, and is educating people about them. Honestly, I don’t know how people learned things about sex and life WITHOUT this woman. She’s amazing. One of my favorite things about her and her channel is the main theme of sex positivity. Her channel is called Sex+ after all. One of the biggest problems with the stigma surrounding discussing sex is that sex is seen as something wrong, or scandalous, and Laci is trying to teach people that it’s okay to talk about sex, and it’s okay to have questions, and that there is nothing wrong with sex or talking about it. I think that’s such an important message, and she does it so wonderfully and eloquently. Bravo, Laci.

Superfruit: This obsession stemmed from my Pentatonix obsessesion (more on that later). So this is a new vlog with Scott Hoying and Mitch Grassi of Pentatonix, and I always knew I loved these two. They’re both a year or two older than me, and they always made jokes on twitter that I related to and I always was like “oh man if I knew them personally we’d totally be best friends.” This vlog pretty much solidified this opinion, because these two are absolutely hilarious and wonderful and I love them so much. It’s probably one of my favorite vlogs out there. I’ve seen all of their vlogs probably three times each, at least, and they never stop being funny. I show their videos to everyone I can, because I’m basically in love with both of them. Plus, they do random runs and start singing all the time in their videos and I want to die every time because they’re both so wonderful and talented. I pretty much feel like these two are my spirit animals/kindred spirits. SCOTT MITCH LET’S BE BEST FRIENDS.

Colleen Ballinger & Joshua David Evans: This obsession is like a week old, so yeah, relatively new. It actually came from my Superfruit obsession, funnily enough. Yeah ok no it’s not that funny but anyway, Superfruit put up a video last week with MirandaSings as a guest. I had heard of MirandaSings years ago when she first started getting big on YouTube, and I saw like half of one of her videos and got annoyed/was not amused and closed out of it before it even finished. I didn’t really get why she was so famous on YouTube just for being bad at singing. She was kind of funny but I didn’t find it all that amusing. It wasn’t until Superfruit that I realized that she was a character and not a real person – I know I’m SO smart. So I got really curious about the girl who played Miranda, Colleen Ballinger, and found her personal channel outside of MirandaSings and watched like 15 of her videos in a row. She’s just adorable and charming and really funny, but I mainly fell in love with her relationship with her boyfriend, Joshua, who’s also a YouTuber. I’m such a sucker for adorable YouTube couples (R.I.P Charlie & Bryarly, I still cry forever about them), and their videos together were so genuinely funny and adorable and honest and wonderful, so I fell in love with them. They’re also both insanely talented singers; I have nothing bad to say about these two.

Ok that was a video of them singing but also LOOK AT HOW ADORABLE THEY ARE. I CRY.

    The Lizzie Bennet Diaries:
This show was actually a huge reason for me getting into vlogs and YouTube more. I was completely infatuated with this show, and I just got more and more into the vlog format. I have a million wonderful things to say about this show but I don’t want to ramble. The whole concept from Hank Green and Bernie Su of taking Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen and modernizing it, and putting it into vlog form is just so incredibly genius and inspired. Hank and Bernie and everyone else who contributed to the show also represent a change in media. First of all, they brought a timeless story to a completely new audience and IMMORTALIZED IT ON THE INTERNET! Additionally, the Lizzie Bennet Diaries told their story not only through one channel, but multiple channels, as well as through other types of social media, like Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, and more. It’s no wonder they won an Emmy (!!!) for Interactive Media. Also, the entire cast is gorgeous. I’m in love with every single one of them. If you haven’t watched it, TODAY IS THE DAY TO CHANGE THAT. Ok that’s all.

    Carrie Hope Fletcher:
I would have preferred to talk about Carrie after talking about my McFly obsession, but oh well. So basically I’ve been obsessed with McFly since 2006. I think they’re incredibly talented, not to mention gorgeous men. But anyway, a couple years ago, I randomly found Tom’s little sister, Carrie Fletcher, on YouTube through her friendship with Alex Day. I watched a couple of her covers and thought, Damn, this girl is talented. What is with this family? Seriously though, talk about winning the genetic lottery. Bravo, Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher. So from then on I watched her videos sporadically and followed her on Twitter, blah blah blah. Every now and then she would tweet about an audition or something, and I would just think, you go girl, I hope you get famous because you’re wonderful. Then one day she tweeted that she was going to be Eponine in Les Mis on West End and I thought HOLD UP WHAT? It just all seemed very sudden, albeit amazing. And now this girl is all over the place, doing 8 shows a week, and I couldn’t be happier for her. There isn’t a more deserving person out there. Talk about crazy amazing talent. I have a little bit of a girl crush on her. Plus, her English accent is just wonderful. I could listen to her talk all day.

Watch this video of Carrie describing her journey to becoming Eponine, and then watch her performing On My Own. Her talent is absolutely staggering.

Tyler Oakley: You knew this was coming. Come on. If I’m making a list of my favorite vlogs, obviously Tyler Oakley is going to be on the list. Saving the best for last. Tyler is pretty much my spirit animal – in fact, I’m pretty sure the reason he’s so popular is because his entire fanbase sees him as their spirit animal. Obviously that’s not the only reason he’s popular, but I do think that since he basically says what all of us are thinking and says it in a really outrageous and hilarious way. Also, he’s living a magical fantasy life. He gets to interview celebrities and travel the whole world and has a million internet friends and he has a glorious apartment in LA and I just no. He’s amazing and I want his life/I want to be best friends with him. I’m putting two of his videos because you can never get enough Tyler Oakley in your life.

    Hank-John-Green1
Vlogbrothers: Another duh. You can’t love YouTube and/or vlogs without loving the two beautiful men that are Hank and John Green. These two are basically the kings of YouTube, and the internet in general. I don’t know how else to describe them. Enjoy the glory of the vlogbrothers.

I couldn’t decide to choose a video of Hank or John, because they’re both amazing, so HERE’S BOTH OF THEM.

  2. McFly – HA you thought that long thing about vlogs was all, but ACTUALLY IT’S JUST #1 ON A VERY LONG LIST. Turns out I’m planning on rambling on for a lot longer. I’m on fall break, you see, so I HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO! Sorry for all the caps. Anyway, as I said before, I’ve been obsessed with McFly for like 7 years now. My obsession was kind of at its peak when I was first getting into them, and from 2006 and like three years after that I listened to Five Colours in Her Hair, I’ve Got You, Obviously and I’ll Be OK on repeat every single day.
McFly circa 2006. You can see why I was in love with them... right?...

McFly circa 2006. You can see why I was in love with them… right?…

Then, after a while, my love for McFly kind of went to the back of my mind and I didn’t pay attention to them anymore. I still loved them, but I wasn’t as avid of a fan. I knew they were still doing things and I was happy about it, but I didn’t keep up at all. Then a couple of weeks ago I decided I wanted to get back into McFly and see how their music had changed over the years. Plus, I had crushes on pretty much all of them when I was 11 and I had a feeling that they probably had grown up well 🙂 So I caught up with their music and I have officially renewed my obsession with them. They’re just an insanely talented group of men (and I was right, they grew up to be incredibly attractive men) and amazing musicians.

McFly in 2012. I honestly had trouble picking just one picture of them because they look SO GOOD in every picture. But LOOK. PUBERTY HAPPENED.

McFly in 2012. I honestly had trouble picking just one picture of them because they look SO GOOD in every picture. But LOOK. PUBERTY HAPPENED.

Their sound has really matured over the years into something amazing; I will admit, I will always have a soft spot for their older stuff, because of the sentimentality (and it’s also got that amazing teenage boy rock sound, very All-American Rejects or JoBro later era, but with a little more soul to it). But now their music has this maturity to it, and it’s a little bit more, I daresay, sexy and musically developed. They’ve also gotten a lot more versatile in their style – they kept their rock and soul, but they also have some cheery ukulele-type music (Love Is Easy, which is one of my new favorites and it is constantly stuck in my head). Love Is Easy is absolutely amazing, and also the video is adorable and they re-create all of their previous album covers and I’m in love with it. One of my other favorite songs off of their most recent album (Memory Lane: The Best of McFly; yeah, they’ve been around for so long that they actually already have a best of album. They’ve been around 10 YEARS. WHAT.) is I Need A Woman. I’m just going to include a link to that because once you hear it, you will understand.

One of their old hits that I’m OBSESSED with. Note the hair. And the huge amounts of sweat.

I’m including two new ones because I love them so much and I just want to share their music with the entire world.

The Love Is Easy video I was talking about. Note THE PUBERTY THAT HAPPENED. Also, look at how dapper they are. I just love them all.

Acoustic version of I Need A Woman. First of all, Tom and Danny. Look. Amazing. But also, they sound great and I just love the song so much. There’s something really retro and amazing about it, but it still has that McFly feel to it. Plus it’s adorable how giggly and silly they are in the video.

  3. The Voice – This obsession totally came out of nowhere, but if you know me at all and hang out with me in person, there is no way you won’t know about this obsession, because I tell everyone how amazing this show is. So I kind of grew up watching American Idol, and my family watched it together. It was actually the only TV I was allowed to watch on schoolnights, and it was kind of a thing I had with my mom. My brother and dad would always come in and out, and watch certain parts with us, but my mom and I were hardcore fans.ameridol
We watched from beginning to end, each season. Sure, we had our issues with it – the blatant humiliation for entertainment aspect where they showed terrible auditions, and how annoying all the judges were, but we loved it nonetheless. But the show has been going on for far too long, and honestly, one of my biggest problems with the show is that the winners are almost never really artists. Because the show is so controlled by America’s viewers, and the judges don’t really have any control at all after the auditions and Hollywood week, the show just becomes a popularity contest. The true talent is usually weeded out far too soon, and America votes for the good-looking All-American guy with the guitar, or the beautiful woman with the mediocre voice.Lee+DeWyze+Photoshoot+Live+It+Up+01
    ht_phillip_phillips_nt_120523_wblog
Kris+Allen+Thank+You+Camellia+Album+BooklThree winners of American Idol, all guys with guitars. Not to say that I have anything against guys with guitars, and Kris Allen and Phillip Phillips (honestly still can’t get over that name) have admittedly both had a couple of hits, whereas I haven’t heard anything from Lee DeWyze since he won, and I honestly didn’t expect to. I just think that America clearly has a preference when it comes to this show and the show isn’t a true showcase of all the kinds of talent there is in the country. This is why successful (being a relative term here) winners of American Idol are so rare. After the get off the show, they don’t really know what to do or how to go forward. I do believe that part of the prize of being the new American Idol is that you get a record deal, but most winners (with the obvious exceptions of Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson and the like) don’t have enough content to put on a full-length album. Most of them are performers/singers, but not musicians. That is my main issue with American Idol.

    No.

    No.

Plus, the show keeps cycling through and changing the judges, and in my opinion, none of them are really qualified to be judges on a singing competition. Like, I’m sorry, I love her, but Ellen Degeneres?! What were they thinking?? She’s hilarious but she knows ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about music!! Also, Nicki Minaj. Just… why? Also, while we’re on the subject, PAULA ABDUL. I don’t know why they picked her in the first place or why she was there for so long, but I never understood what made her qualified to be a judge on the show. She never really had helpful comments; she just talked about how much she liked the contestants as people or how much she loved their outfit or something, which is nice, but it was never helpful. Simon, on the other hand, was just a bully. I hated that he was paid to be mean for entertainment, because that just makes me hate the entertainment industry. Because if you watch him on The X Factor or other shows, sure he’s a little egotistical, but he’s not flat out mean for no reason like he was on American Idol. Then there’s Randy. Yeah, I understand he’s a music producer and that’s all fancy and important and exciting, but I didn’t really think he ever had helpful comments either. I’m pretty sure he just used the word “pitchy” to describe every performance he didn’t like because he had no other things to say. Plus, Ryan Seacrest scares me. Pretty sure he hasn’t aged in the past 10 years. Just saying. So I stopped watching American Idol maybe 3 seasons ago. I was just kind of done.

They are all flawless and no one can convince me otherwise. The other day a friend tried to convince me that Adam Levine was a douchebag and I just refused to believe it.

They are all flawless and no one can convince me otherwise. The other day a friend tried to convince me that Adam Levine was a douchebag and I just refused to believe it.

Then I discovered The Voice. I actually stumbled onto the show a little bit accidentally. Because of my obsession with The Lizzie Bennet Diaries (see above) and its cast, I heard that Briana Cuoco (Mary Bennet) was going to be on the show. I had heard of the show before, and I knew it was a really successful show, but I didn’t really have any interest (I had my fill of singing shows with American Idol). But then I heard Briana was going to be on the show and I wanted to support her!

rs_293x473-131007190411-634.Briana-Cuoco-The-Voice.ms.100713_copyI try to watch whatever the LBD cast is in, just because I want them to succeed. They’re so wonderful and talented. So anyway, Briana tweeted that she wasn’t sure which night of the blind auditions would screen her audition, so I just decided to watch every one until I saw her audition and then I would just watch her performances and nothing else. God knows I didn’t need another show to watch. But after the first episode, I was hooked. There was just something so different about it. It had something that American Idol lacked, and something that I wanted in a singing competition show. The biggest aspect that I loved was the concept of blind auditions. Contrary to American Idol, contestants auditioned for the judges with the judges’ backs turned. The judges made all of their decisions based solely on the person’s voice, instead of judging based on appearance or anything else.

OB-ZC957_voice1_E_20131001201439The Voice took a huge part of American Idol’s key entertainment component and destroyed it, showing that it should be all about the talent. Additionally, anyone who came to the blind auditions was there by invitation; so there weren’t any horrendous auditions to laugh at anyway. The Voice set a certain standard in terms of quality and talent, eliminating any embarrassing/awful auditions and making it all about people’s voices and their talents and goals as artists. Additionally, the judges are all incredibly successful musicians (of different genres) that really know what they’re doing. These judges (they actually stay away from the word judges, which I also like; they’re called coaches instead, which is just so wonderful. They focus more on the mentorship of the contestants, who are actually called artists instead) can nurture the artists and help them learn and grow, as opposed to in American Idol where the contestants are just kind of thrown into competition mode immediately and expected to know what to do without much help. The judges on American Idol just kind of sit back and watch while having other people do the work and mentorship. The coaches on The Voice are so much more involved, and so much more invested in the artists because they fight to have these artists on their respective “teams,” and there’s so much more camaraderie on this show among the artists. I always thought there was kind of a lack of camaraderie on American Idol; or even if there was camaraderie, the audience wasn’t really shown much of it, and that made me really sad. But anyway, the talent on this show is absolutely astonishing. It blows my mind how versatile and talented the people in this country (or this world, rather) are. And the coaches embrace the artists for their individuality, and encourage them to savor and nurture that. So yeah, basically I’m obsessed with this show now. There’s an insane amount of talent on this season particularly. I’ve even been going back and watching past seasons, because I just can’t get enough. Here’s some of my favorite auditions from this season:

    SO.

    MUCH.

    TALENT.

    IT’S.

    ACTUALLY.

    SO.

    RIDICULOUS.

  4. Jam sessions – Ok so this is so random but oh well I’m including it. So I started trying to teach myself to play guitar in my freshman and sophomore year of high school. It was really tedious and I didn’t get very far, but I got the basic hang of it – I could play a lot of the easy chords and I would spend a lot of time on ultimate-guitar.com trying to play all of my favorite songs and feel like I knew what I was doing (hint: I didn’t). I continued to attempt to play guitar sporadically (Clueless shoutout) for the rest of high school and then when I went to college, I couldn’t bring my guitar with me overseas, seeing as I had a ton of other crap I was bringing with me. So I stopped playing for about a semester, and then when I came home for winter break I played a little bit more, and then I came back for summer break and played more and more, and I realized how much I missed it. My brother, who had been going to school in Portland until that summer, was moving to Singapore for his job and didn’t want to take his guitar overseas, so he offered it to me. I jumped at the chance to take it, so that I could have a guitar in college with me. So I’ve been playing more and more, trying to get those pathetic barely-there guitar calluses back. The other day, my friend and next-door neighbor Maddy (who’s extremely musically inclined, she’s an expert in theory and has been playing piano for years, and it basically a musical genius) heard me playing Ho Hey by The Lumineers. She came in and went, “You sound amazing!… want to have a jam session like right now? I’m supposed to practice piano for my performance class but screw it.” So I followed her to our dorm living room and we just sat there, with other people studying around us (hey, no one protested, otherwise I would have felt bad for disturbing them), with Maddy at the piano and me with my guitar, and we just played whatever came to mind and I sang. At one point my friend Stephanie, who’s in a cappella with me, came and joined us and harmonized with me. It just felt so quintessential college to me, and also I just realized how lucky I was to be able to spend time with so many other people who love music as much as I do, and who are so good at it. I guess it was just a moment when I felt really lucky to be where I am right now, and also how lucky I am to have music in my life.
  5. The Mindy Project – So this is also a relatively recent obsession; I’ve been obsessed with The Office for years, and basically worshipped the entire cast. I was so devastated when the show ended; I sobbed the whole way through the series finale, it was baaaaad. But anyway, since the show ended I felt like I had a huge void in my life that only BJ Novak/Mindy Kaling style humor could fill. A couple of friends who also had watched The Office kept urging me to watch The Mindy Project last year, saying that it was hilarious and if I loved Mindy on The Office I would love the show.
    Flawless.

Flawless. God, I miss this show.

For some reason, I didn’t feel that drawn to it, and I didn’t really feel a need to start it, even though I missed The Office so much. So my friends kept talking to me about it, in hopes that I would start at some point. Towards the end of the school year they kind of forgot about telling me about it, so I didn’t hear much about it after that. I followed Mindy on twitter, so I heard about the show all the time and I heard James Franco was going to guest star. I remember thinking, oh, so this is getting pretty legit then, huh? I guess some small part of me in the back of my mind thought it was going to get cancelled; I have no idea why I thought that. Mindy is incredibly intelligent and talented and an amazing writer and actress, so I don’t know why I didn’t have faith in her. Plus I knew that BJ was helping her out and was a producer or co-writer or something, so I had no doubt that it was funny. But anyway, I remember thinking whoa, James Franco is guest starring? This is getting serious now. And then at the beginning of this school year, I remember thinking, I need another funny show. I watch way too many dramas. I need more funny in my life. New Girl supplied me with plenty of funny, but I missed laughing out loud at The Office every week.

mindy_project_coming_this_fall_640x360_20653047So I randomly decided to start The Mindy Project, and wowowowowow. I don’t understand why I didn’t start it sooner. It is absolutely hysterical, and while it is a taaaad self-indulgent, Mindy totally acknowledges that and sets up the fictional version of herself on the show to be a self-indulgent, self-involved person who somehow is also incredibly relatable. Mindy is one of those writers and comedians that just says what everyone is thinking but is afraid to say, and also draws on those guilty habits we all have but never talk about and puts it all into one hilarious character. That is the character of Mindy Lahiri on the show. The show is fantastic. She put together a pretty good ensemble cast, too; no one’s too annoying or too obnoxious or anything. A couple of the characters that seemed a little bit one dimensional at first were given more depth, and each character has had their shining moments of hilarity. It’s just all-around a really great show, and I’m really just so glad that Mindy went off on her own and is making a name for herself.

  6. Mindy Kaling – Yeah okay I guess I’m just obsessed with Mindy Kaling in general. She’s a pretty amazing woman. First of all, I’m just going to say it: I’m just so happy that there’s another woman of color out there who’s intelligent, beautiful, funny, and is succeeding in the entertainment industry. We can never have too many of those, in my opinion. I think Mindy is just absolutely fabulous.mindy-kaling_wide-b2c920af64f476d4f861de6a4cd4b4e08843f781-s6-c30I just started reading her book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns), and it’s just amazing. If you have not read it, I recommend you go out and buy it RIGHT NOW. That’s right, stop reading this. And go to your nearest Barnes & Noble. And BUY IT. Or, if you’re one of those people that never goes into stores and only shops online, GO TO AMAZON AND BUY IT NOW. kcool so we can move on.
    Seriously. This book is amazing.

    Seriously. This book is amazing.

Honestly, there are so many things I have to say about Mindy Kaling and how cool she is, and how inspirational she is, but I somehow can’t put it into proper words. I just… she’s awesome. I would love to be her (or something like her). Also, Time apparently named her one of the 100 most influential people IN THE WORLD. How badass is that?!

  7. Amy Poehler & Tina Fey – So after that Mindy Kaling rave I’m sure you saw this coming. But honestly, who isn’t obsessed with these women? I think it’s pretty clear from the announcement that these two are going to be hosting The Golden Globes for the next two years that the entire world is in love with Amy Poehler & Tina Fey.
    QUEENS.

    QUEENS.

Example 1: Parks & Recreation, Amy Poehler’s show on NBC (which is spectacular by the way) just celebrated their 100th episode. That is quite a feat in the television world, let me say. That is a BIG DEAL. It helps that they have an incredible flawless cast and incredible writing. It also helps that the show was created by the creators of The Office (yes, it all makes sense now, doesn’t it?) and that Amy Poehler is one of the producers. Seriously, what can’t this woman do?!

MV5BMTcwMzE4NzQxMF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjM4ODI2OA@@._V1._SX463_SY600_On a slightly unrelated note, I’m still wounded from finding out about her divorce with Will Arnett. I shed REAL TEARS when I found out. Also, I think that the glory years of SNL were with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. I mean, SNL will always be great in my opinion, but come on. Those were the best times. And don’t even get me started on Tina Fey. This woman is EVERYTHING. Example 2: she wrote the greatest teen movie our generation (let’s face it, the world) has ever seen. Mean Girls will forever be the most quotable movie in the entire world, and I will not listen to anyone’s argument on that.

    Always listen to Gretchen Wieners.

    Always listen to Gretchen Wieners.

Example 3: there is the flawlessness that is 30 Rock. If I had had it my way, that show would have gone on forever. Literally forever. Even after all the actors died, they would just do what G.E. did for Seinfeld-Vision in that one episode. IMMORTALIZE ALL OF THEM FOREVER. Also, it gives me major feels that Tina & Amy have been friends for so long and that they performed in Second City together all those years ago. Seriously though, they are an unstoppable duo. Both flawless. My love for them is endless.

  8. Nashville – So, I started watching this show last year about halfway through the season. A friend had been urging me to watch for months, saying she knew that I would fall in love with it. Aaaaand she was right. I watched the pilot and ended up watching like the next four episodes right after that in a marathon in the next day and a half. I’ve been obsessed ever since.nashville-show-011612And honestly, the show just keeps getting better and better. The characters are getting more complex and layered, and more things keep happening, and the music. Oh god, the music. I always knew that I liked country music (well, parts of it), but this show has completely solidified my love for country music. Also, it’s made me want to visit Nashville and just sit in bars and cafés all day and listen to all the talent in that city. The entire cast of the show is just incredible, and the show is just bursting with talent. I can’t get enough of this show. It’s definitely high up on my list of favorites. Plus, Scarlett and Gunnar. Oh my goodness. Two of the characters on the show become writing partners, and the duets that they perform are absolutely stunning. The songs are very country folk-y, with a Civil Wars vibe to them. Plus, they’re both just gorgeous human beings.Nashville-Scarlett-and-GunnarAlso, Lennon and Maisy Stella – they’re a pair of sisters, who are 14 and 9 years old (wow I can’t get over HOW YOUNG THEY ARE). Along with being incredible actors (I will honestly never understand child actors and how some of them can portray emotion so clearly and honestly at such a young age, when their emotions aren’t even fully developed and they don’t even fully understand them or know how to control them), they’re staggeringly talented musicians.LENNON STELLA, MAISY STELLALennon, the older sister, is an amazing guitar player (better than I will ever be), and both she and Maisy have incredibly pure, mature voices. I can’t even imagine how talented these girls are going to be as they grow and mature. I really just hope that they are raised well and are kept grounded – I always have that fear when it comes to child stars, that they won’t grow up well and will end up screwed up somehow. It’s just not fair to them at all. This is one of the beautiful Scarlett/Gunnar duets I was talking about. Plus, a little peek into the amazing acting from Lennon and Maisy (still blows my mind).http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wsTU1huSeATALENT.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceYtOlmImNEI forgot to talk about the flawless Hayden Panettiere. She’s incredible in this show. Her acting is incredible, and she adds so much depth to her character. I originally hated her character in the pilot, but there’s something so magnetic about Hayden Panettiere; I ended up somehow loving the character, and then seeing the layers of the character later. It also helps that she’s an incredible singer and performer. I’ve been so impressed with her on this show.

  9. Vulfpeck – I could go on forever about this band. I discovered them about a year ago – I went to a show in LA for Theo Katzman, who I’ve talked about before. He shared the stage with Jack Stratton, Joey Dosik, and Caleb Hawley (all incredible musicians; I recommend checking all of them out). I came out of that show so stunned by the talent and feeling incredibly inspired. I looked up all three of the new musicians from that night and found Vulfpeck, a contemporary jazz/funk/soul band that Jack, Joey, Theo and a few others are a part of. I’ve always loved jazz music; in middle school in my concert band days when I played clarinet (I was a really cool kid obviously), I always secretly wanted to switch over to saxophone. So discovering Vulfpeck was awesome; they’re a group of incredibly talented musicians just making the kind of music that they love. I don’t really know what else to say about them, because their music kind of speaks for itself.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XftabV9S2z0
  10. Photography – This is absolutely not a new obsession; it’s actually more of an obsession I want to get more into, because I’ve kind of drifted from it and that makes me sad. In high school I was pretty hardcore into photography. There were a lot of other aspiring photographers in my high school and I didn’t really try to compete with them. They all had fancier cameras, more equipment, and more experience than me. They were always the ones asked to photograph school events, and be the official photographers for the school charity fashion shows. I never tried to compete with them because I was a lot newer to the field (I got into it a lot more sophomore year onwards) and I didn’t have as much interest in fashion photography, mostly because I felt like it was a little bit out of my depth. There seemed to be kids in my high school that started doing fashion photography starting from like 8th grade, and were so far ahead of the game, so I felt like I probably shouldn’t even try touching that field. Anyway, I got really into photography just for fun, just for me.Screen shot 2013-10-20 at 2.13.04 AMScreen shot 2013-10-20 at 2.12.41 AM Screen shot 2013-10-20 at 2.12.10 AMScreen shot 2013-10-20 at 2.09.25 AM Screen shot 2013-10-20 at 2.11.41 AM  Screen shot 2013-10-20 at 2.10.10 AM Screen shot 2013-10-20 at 2.09.40 AM Screen shot 2013-10-20 at 2.08.49 AM
Okay sorry. Shameless self-promotion over.I created a flickr page (yeah I know, no one really uses flickr anymore, I don’t really know why I did it) and put up all my photos. I really loved nature and animal photography in particular, and I also loved night photography. I also really loved taking portraits. I loved trying to capture someone’s essence or their personality or energy in just one photo. One of my favorite things about photography is the ability to capture one single moment and freeze it in time. That’s probably why I love learning about history through photographs so much more than through textbooks, because I feel like you can only learn so much through reading about events in a textbook as opposed to actually seeing it and feeling the emotions from that moment flowing through you as you look at the photograph (example: photographs from The Great Depression, or the Holocaust, or any type of tragedy. Or in contrast, the famous photo from V-J Day). In college though, I’ve gotten lazy. I capture all of my moments with my phone, like the rest of the world. And I feel like I’ve been too busy to just walk around and take photos. There are moments when I’m walking around and I think, this would make an amazing picture. But I never have my camera with me anymore.
  11. Jay Stolar – So I saw Jay at a concert in LA last fall. He shared the stage with one of my favorite musicians, Charlene Kaye (if you haven’t heard her, CHECK HER OUT. I’ll put in a video of one of her songs. She’s so wonderful.) and I absolutely fell in love with his music. His music has so much soul to it, and there’s something just so honest and true to his music, but you still get that singer-songwriter vibe that I love so much. I just love that his music is just so earnest and wonderful, but also so catchy. I truly think that this man is going to go places. He is one of my favorite musicians ever, and I am just such a huge fan. He had a kickstarter a while ago for his debut album (which just came out last week, GO LISTEN TO IT! IT’S ON SPOTIFY AND ALSO ONLINE!) and I couldn’t not contribute. I just want him to do well, because he deserves it so much and his talent is just amazing. As a contributor to his kickstarter I had early access to his album and I literally just listened to it on repeat for weeks. When I was studying, when I was going to sleep, when I was just hanging out in my room… always. And now that his album has been released, I have it on my phone (it’s the only album on my phone, since my phone has no space and I can’t fit my music on it) and literally listen to it all the time. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve fallen asleep listening to his album. He’s just a true musician, and I have so much respect and admiration for him.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcpLhaVcEDg
  12. Jewelry – Suuuuper random, but this is just something I’ve noticed lately. I’ve always had tons of jewelry and I tend to buy jewelry a lot when I’m out shopping or whatever, and then I never end up wearing. I just wear the same necklace and earrings every single day. Then at the beginning of this semester I went to some random student sale over at Pitzer College where seniors from last year just gave all of the stuff they didn’t want. All of the items were being sold for under $10 dollars and I found this gorgeous jewelry tree for a dollar. I decided to grab it, because the jewelry holder I had made it hard to see everything I had and just encouraged me to never wear any of it.Screen shot 2013-10-21 at 12.09.23 AM
So now that I have a new way to hold my jewelry, I’ve been trying to wear all of my earrings and rings and all and I’m very proud of myself for it, because I felt so awful for just wasting all that money on jewelry and then never wearing it. Yay for personal progress!
  13. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D – This show is seriously just fueling my obsession with the Marvel universe. This show was seriously just what I needed. It’s exciting, amazing, hilarious, and epic. I don’t really know how else to describe it. Plus, everyone loves Coulson. How can you not? Clark Gregg is just genius. And Joss Whedon’s writing is flawless (but we all knew that already, didn’t we?) and everyone in the cast is just so wonderful.marvel_shield_a_l_0Ming-Na Wen, first of all; she’s gorgeous, badass, and just an amazing woman. Her character is kind of a hardass with a soft side and I just love her so much. Plus… WOC. Enough said. And like I said, Clark Gregg: he’s just so endearing and wonderful, and is also just such a badass as Phil Coulson. Then there’s Chloe Bennet’s character of Skye: firstly, she’s just such a hottie. I mean really though, what a gorgeous woman. And she’s got stellar comedic timing, and always love when TV shows make gorgeous women more than just gorgeous women. She’s also a genius computer hacker, and she’s brave and headstrong and intelligent and innovative. But, something I also love about her character is that she’s also flawed. She’s clumsy and stubborn, and impulsive, and I love that about her. I’m just so proud that Joss Whedon created such an awesome female character (not that I’m surprised). Then there’s Grant Ward, who fulfill the role of man candy and also badass and also romantic interest for Skye. I have no complaints. The character has a lot of potential to be really layered and complex, and I’m so excited for the show to explore his past more. Then there’s Fitz and Simmons, played by Iain De Caestecker (wow, Scottish much?) and Elizabeth Henstridge respectively. They’re in charge of weapons tech/engineering and life sciences, and they’re both just adorable and nerdy and endearing, and they’re just so wonderful.Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. cast L - R: Ming-Na Wen, Chloe B
I have so much love for this cast and these characters already, and there have only been four episodes. THAT IS SAYING SOMETHING.
  14. Pentatonix – I honestly don’t even know where to begin with my Pentatonix obsession. It kind of came out of nowhere, too. I somehow discovered The Sing-Off (I don’t remember how), and started watching all of the season 1 performances in a row. Oh wait, I think I remember how I discovered the show now. I’ve been obsessed with college a cappella forever – I don’t remember how I first got into it, but I’ve always been obsessed with choral and a cappella groups. So anyway, I discovered seasons 1 and 2 of The Sing-Off and became absolutely infatuated with it.the-sing-off
I watched videos of Street Corner Symphony, The Whiffenpoofs,  and The Backbeats on repeat for months. My obsession was fueled by a visit from The Spizzwinks(?) from Yale – they came to my high school and did a concert and a workshop with my high school choir, which was incredible. Then, a while later, Delilah and the Tufts Beelzebubs came to Hong Kong to do some shows. I hadn’t heard of Delilah before but I went to the show anyway, because I knew I loved the Beelzebubs.

My friends and I with a couple of the Tufts Beelzebubs in Hong Kong!

My friends and I with a couple of the Tufts Beelzebubs in Hong Kong!

I fell completely in love with the women of Delilah, and realized they had also been on The Sing-Off. I went back to YouTube and watched every single one of their videos, before realizing that they hadn’t even won the show, but some random group called Pentatonix had won. I remember being absolutely baffled that Delilah hadn’t won, and resented this “random” other group. Then I decided to check them out to see what the big deal was. Aaaaand I fell in love. There’s just no denying their talent, creativity, innovation and individuality.

Look at these beautiful wonderful people.

Look at these beautiful wonderful people.

There just isn’t a group out there like them. There’s so unique and wonderful and talented and I just have endless positive things to say about them. I basically want to be them. They are an incredibly revolutionary group, not just to the world of a cappella, but to the music world. They took so many risks on The Sing-Off that just blew everyone’s minds, and they’ve made such a difference in making a cappella a more well-known, respected art in the music world. I love everything they do, basically. I’ve pre-ordered their new album (PTX Vol. II) and I’ve already listened to all of the previews of the tracks on iTunes a million times. I know it’s going to be incredible.

  15. She’s Not Afraid (One Direction) – Yeah, there’s no denying my One Direction obsession. I’m not even ashamed of it. They’re talented guys, and also insanely attractive and so easily likeable. I am ridiculously excited for their new album coming out in November, Midnight Memories (I’ve also pre-ordered it… GIVE IT TO ME NOW). I heard a preview the other day of one of the tracks, Story of My Life and it’s incredible. But anyway, one of my all-time favorite tracks from their most recent album, Take Me Home, is She’s Not Afraid. The movie (This Is Us) is really what fueled this obsession with this specific song. I can’t really explain why I love it so much, it’s just so catchy and easy to dance to, and it’s one of those songs that’s just so fun to sing along to and just amazing. Plus, the lyrics are kind of really hot.one-direction-2013-brit-awards-05God, I wish there was an actual music video for this song.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5e-ITR9d9PA
  16. Typography – This is a really random new obsession, partially because of my roommate. I’ve lately become really obsession with typography, particularly on posters. And if I had endless money, I would probably have ordered 50 new typography posters by now. But because money, I ordered all the prints as small 5×7 prints on Walmart’s website and now I’ve put them all up on the wall next to my desk. I don’t know, they just make me happy 🙂5802781_14804310_lzScreen shot 2013-10-11 at 11.45.17 AM

  17. Backstreet Boys – This is also pretty new; growing up, I almost barely missed the Backstreet Boys craze. I kind of caught the tail end of it, and caught the end of their I Want It That Way/Everybody/Larger Than Life glory days. So I grew up obsessed with those particular songs, but not really the group specifically. Because of when I was born, I was definitely more of an ‘N Sync girl (Bye Bye Bye 5evar). But then a few months ago, I saw that the Backstreet Boys were doing a show in Irvine, with Jesse McCartney (OH GODDDDDD) opening for them. HOW could I say no to that?! So my roommate and I snatched up a couple of tickets and we went in early September.1236391_10153177859800456_765253547_n
It was incredible. First of all, Jesse McCartney. He somehow got even more attractive than he was before (definitely one of my first big childhood crushes; I listened to Best Day of My Life and Beautiful Soul a scary amount of times) and even more talented. I was just stunned with what an amazing performer he really was. Plus, his new music is actually pretty incredible. This one song, Back Together, has kind of a retro Hanson-esque vibe to it and I’m in love with it. Also, him. And when he did Beautiful Soul life my 12 year-old self pretty much died and went to heaven. It was glorious.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmMPH8WjKIoThen, the Backstreet Boys came out. And they were PERFECT. First of all, it just blew my mind that they’re all 30+ (pretty sure one of them is 40. I KNOW, WHAT?) and are still such incredible performers and can dance just as well, if not better, than they could before. They did a ton of their old classics, which were amazing, and I enjoyed them so much. But they also did a bunch of their newer stuff from their most recent album, and I was so impressed. All of the songs were flawless. And something I realized about the Backstreet Boys that I didn’t know before was that these guys are not just a boy band and performers, but they’re also artists. They wrote a bunch of their new stuff, and they took breaks from the dancing to just sit down on stools and play guitars and sing, to focus on the music. I was so impressed.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BruEqHpQRgYhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUk7TvoOuMs
  18. Vampire Weekend – Another new obsession. I had always appreciated this band, and thought they were a great indie rock group with catchy music. But when I went to their show at the Hollywood Bowl a few weeks ago, I really came to appreciate them. Their music, along with being catchy and wonderful indie music, has some really incredible lyrics and musical integrity. They’ve definitely moved up to be one of my favorite bands now.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIcjA5ykloIhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANznirklthshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_i1xk07o4g
  19. Feminism – This one kinds of goes without saying, especially because of the women’s college thing. Plus, I feel like as a woman, I should be obsessed with feminism. Why wouldn’t you be obsessed with fighting for equal rights for not only women, but all genders? I could go on about this forever, but I really shouldn’t. But anyway, feminism is awesome. And the world needs feminism. There are still so many problems in this world that need to be fixed, and there’s also just so much heteronormativity that I didn’t see before, and I really need all of that to not exist. So yeah, feminism! Equality! Yay!

  21. MY FRIENDS – Alright I’m about to get super cheesy. But this is just something I’ve thought about a lot lately; I’m just really grateful for the people that I have in my life. My friends here in college are all incredible people; I talk to them about anything and everything, and I feel comfortable being myself. Just that fact simply makes me feel really lucky, because I know it’s not a common thing. They’re also just hilarious, wonderful people, and I know that I can always have fun with them, but I also know that we can be serious and talk about the really important things in life. Some of these people know more about me than anyone else.534998_10153303909840456_18999213_n 1239467_10201799523726804_1090985560_n 945966_10201894127211832_400353253_n

    945125_10151457990296188_220549455_n
Along with my college friends, there are quite a few people from middle school and high school that I still keep in touch with and am still close with, and I am so grateful for that. The prospect of losing touch with my close friends really scared me when I was in high school, and I’m really glad that I’ve kept close with the people that really matter to me. These people really do know me best; they’ve known me for years and years, and also grew up with me, so I don’t ever have to explain my upbringing or explain my worldview to them, because they relate to me in a certain way that I value so much.1000798_10153007295395495_204705354_n 400699_10153007289645495_1189903508_n 23411_10152481982955495_1916865287_n
Anyway, I’m just really thankful to have so many amazing people in my life. I’m obsessed with my friends 🙂

Thoughts on Third Culture Kids

I haven’t posted in months… oops. Still not really used to this blog thing, I guess. But I have thoughts to share! YAY!

So, I’m taking a basic acting class at Pomona College this semester, which I’m very excited about. A lot of the stuff is totally out of my comfort zone, since most of my experience is with singing and a little bit of acting on the side. I love this class and hate it at the same time. But I love it more, and I think I’ve decided (BIG ANNOUNCEMENT COMING UP READY?) that I’m probably going to minor in theatre. YAY! It’s all very exciting. But anyway, for this class, we’re required to write a monologue to perform in the next few weeks. It has to be about ourselves, and it has to be true. Those are the main guidelines, and we can get creative with that. I immediately knew I wanted to talk about my cultural identity. It’s something I’ve struggled with my entire life (even when I didn’t know it). Even at this point, I’m not really sure where or how I identify completely. But that’s what blogs are for! Putting down all your thoughts in hopes that either it will accomplish something/help in some way, or at least you’ll feel better afterwards. So here goes.

I always dreaded the “where are you from?” question when meeting new people, because I would either have to explain my upbringing, or just pick and choose from my list of locations, even though picking just one place isn’t a proper explanation of my identity or my connection to that place. My parents were born and raised, and went to college in the Philippines before getting married and coming to the United States for grad school. They moved around within the US before settling in New York. They lived there for 10 years, and in that time, my older brother and I were born. So I’m an American citizen, born in New York. But I have never once told someone I am from New York. Because I’m not. I honestly know nothing about New York. Like so many people, the concept of New York and living in New York is such a foreign, faraway concept to me.

Image

My older brother Alan and I in our house in New York (apparently).

Before I turned 2, my dad got a job offer overseas, and our family moved to Hong Kong and settled down in the international community with many other expats. I grew up around kids from all over the world, with all different backgrounds and ethnicities and cultures. But we all grew up in an Americanized international community, where most of us went to the States to see family or had a relaxing resort vacation in Bali or Thailand during breaks. It was a very fascinating and unique mix of cultures, but it didn’t feel abnormal to me.

I was very aware of the vast array of cultures, identities, and opinions around me, but at the same time, I barely ever though about race. Racism seemed like such a foreign concept to me, because in my community, cultures were just so accepted without question. I spent most of my summers growing up here in California, spending time in the Bay Area with my grandparents, and enjoying a small sliver of suburban life before going back to international city life for the school year. When I came to the US for college, I did have minimal culture shock. But it did make me think a lot about my cultural identity. I got used to introducing myself during icebreakers and saying, “I’m from Hong Kong.” I still do, to be honest. Out of the Philippines, New York, and Hong Kong, I have the strongest connection to Hong Kong, and I really do consider it home. I have a very limited connection to the Philippines; I have family there, and we go every year for holidays, but I feel almost like an alien when I’m walking around in Manila. I don’t speak the language, but people assume I do because of how I look. So when I’m spoken to in the Philippines and I respond in an American accent, with no ability to speak the language, I feel like any other foreigner. Sure, I know some things about the culture and I enjoy the cuisine, but I do not at all feel like a part of the culture.

Image

Celebrating the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011 in Manila with my older brother, grandma, and cousins!

And then there’s America, and New York specifically. Sometimes I feel like I really am a part of American culture here, and I fit in well. But there are times that I don’t. I am much more aware of my ethnicity and how I look here than I ever was growing up. Another thing that makes me feel estranged from American culture is that when people see my face, and learn I’m “from” Hong Kong, most people’s immediate reaction is something like: “Oh, but your English is so good!” or, “But you don’t have an accent or anything!” or, even worse, “Wait so, have you ever like, eaten a hamburger before?” I’ve gotten this response so often that at this point, my standard response is just to nod politely and go, “Yeah, well… I went to an American international school.” On the one hand, I really have no right to be annoyed with ignorance, because how can I expect them to know about my life? But at the same time, I can’t help being annoyed, because these people are making assumptions about me and another culture based on nothing solid.  It’s something I’ve experienced my entire life, and I haven’t seen it getting any better. There’s a whole population of kids like me, who call themselves “Third Culture Kids,” who commonly have trouble answering the question “where are you from?” and have trouble identifying with one culture. It is nice to think that I’m not the only experiencing this kind of confusion, but I mainly wish that more people in general were aware of the hundreds of thousands, or even millions of kids growing up in this kind of environment.

Image

With some of my wonderful college friends from the spring semester of my first year. All amazing women, and I love them all dearly!

I am, however, thankful for the people I have met here in Claremont; my best friends here are people who have asked genuine, sincere questions about my background, and we’ve learned about each other (as friends do), and they know the most about me. I’m so thankful for them, because they’re all wonderful. At this point, I think I do identify as a “Third Culture Kid” who doesn’t associate with just one culture. There’s something about that label that makes me a little uncomfortable, just because it seems like we’re trying to put ourselves above others because we were lucky to have the experiences that we’ve had. But I do understand that’s not the purpose of the label, I’m just being over-analytical (as usual). So, I guess I am a Third Culture Kid.

Into the Woods Dream Movie Casting (aka A Collection of Broadway’s Finest)

Hey y’all it’s been a while (and by hey y’all I mean hey nobody, since this blog has 0 readership looool). I told myself that the next time I posted it would be about LeakyCon, but I realized writing a long rambling post about all of my wonderful fangirl moments after a long rambling post about my Darren Criss fangirl moments would have been a dumb move.

So in January of 2012, Disney signed on to make a film adaptation of Into the Woods, the Broadway musical written by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine. This show is particularly close to my heart because in my senior year of high school, a close friend (Nathalie) and I decided we were sick of our school’s meager theatre department and directed, produced, and acted in our own production of the show. Basically, I know this show backwards and forwards. I don’t mean that in an obnoxious way, I just mean that my friend and I studied the script meticulously, and this show was basically our lives for 10 months. When I heard they were doing a movie adaptation, I was conflicted. I was excited that such an amazing story would be reaching a much larger audience, but I was also worried that a movie adaptation would not do the story justice. And when the casting speculations starting pouring in… oh boy.

Basically today, I talked with the same friend on Skype for about an hour and half about our thoughts on the upcoming adaptation, and our dream casting decisions. We came to the conclusion that we should really become casting directors after graduating college. Keep in mind that our casting decisions are not meant for everyone to agree with them. We picked who we thought would be best for how we see the role should be portrayed.

The Baker – Santino Fontana

Image

Ah, The Baker. What an iconic role. I think a lot of people see The Baker as kind of a one-dimensional character, but I think The Baker is a beautifully written character; probably one of my favorite male musical theatre roles ever. And get a look at this cutie. Santino Fontana, who debuted on Broadway in Sunday in the park with George in 2007, is the best choice for this role, in my opinion. He’s good-looking (you can’t argue with me there), a stellar actor, and has a gorgeous voice. He’s currently playing Prince Topher in Cinderella on Broadway, but if he becomes free anytime soon, he should be the TOP CHOICE for this role. Just listen to that voice (BONUS: he’s singing with real-life angel and Disney princess, Laura Osnes).

The Baker’s Wife – Nina Arianda

Image

The Baker’s Wife is another amazing role – what an intriguing character. The audience spends most of the first act rooting for her to find everything necessary to reverse this curse put on her family so that she can finally have a normal, happy marriage. And then BAM! Act Two comes along and then everyone knows that’s just not going to happen. The way The Baker’s Wife deals with all of that is, in my opinion, just fascinating. Plus, she’s hilarious. I can just Nina Arianda breathing new life into this role and making it extra wonderful. Nina Arianda made her Broadway debut in 2011 in the play Born Yesterday, and has yet to do a musical. But just look at how gorgeous she is, first of all. Then picture her playing opposite Santino Fontana. You can see it, can’t you? And LOOK SHE’S ALREADY WON A TONY FOR ACTING, LOOK HOW CUTE SHE IS:

This is pretty much a no-brainer. Laura has the voice of an angel. I wish she could sing me to sleep and just sing to me all day. Her voice is LITERALLY HEAVEN. Plus, she’s gorgeous. So, there’s that. She’s currently playing Cinderella in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella… so if she’s not willing to play Cinderella again… well… tough. Because no one else can play this role. NO ONE (sorry Anna Kendrick). Along with Cinderella, Laura is most well known for her roles in Grease, South Pacific, Anything Goes, and Bonnie and Clyde. But really, she just is Cinderella. There’s no question about it. Plus, Santino & Laura working together again… and The Baker and Cinderella ending up together in the end… clearly, it’s fate. Imagining her singing No One is Alone is giving me premature chills.

Try to find an imperfection. Just try, I DARE YOU.

Little Red Riding Hood – Celia Keenan-Bolger/Betsy Wolfe

tumblr_static_ur_too_much_for_me    79520

Little Red is an amazing role, but needs an actress with a very specific type of demeanor. I believe that both Celia Keenan-Bolger and Betsy Wolfe would embody that adorable-and-innocent-but-actually-kind-of-violent-and-angry personality perfectly. Both of them are stellar actresses, and both of them would look totes adorbs in a red cloak, let’s be real. Celia Keenan-Bolger made her Broadway debut in 2005 as a part of the original cast of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, snagging a Tony nomination, and Betsy Wolfe is best known for playing Cathy in the 2013 revival of The Last Five Years, and 110 in the Shade. Both Celia and Betsy have STUNNING voices and amazing stage presence. You can’t go wrong with either of them.

Skip to 1:27 to see Betsy!

Celia is just the cutest. She captures the childish nature of the song (which is needed as Little Red) and is just hilarious!

Jack – ?

Image

You like the cheesy question mark picture? Yeah, me neither. I’m so sorry. The OCD in me just needed a picture to be there. Nathalie and I went over and over this, and we honestly couldn’t settle on someone for Jack. The only thing we concluded was that we both disapproved of the rumors that Daniel Huttlestone (Gavroche from the Les Mis film) was being considered for Jack. Not that I have anything against him, but I just think that he’s too young to play Jack – one of the biggest parts of his character is that he’s getting older but still acting like a child. That’s kind of hard to portray if you actually are a child. Just saying. So Nathalie and I agreed that if, in a parallel universe, we were the casting directors for this movie adaptation, we would hold an open casting call for Jack. You never know what amazing talent you’ll find that way. If anyone has any suggestions for Jack, LET ME KNOW (not that anyone besides Nathalie is reading this. Hi, Nathalie!).

The Witch – Audra McDonald

Image

You can’t not have a fabulous insanely talented diva play The Witch. It’s just not done. When you cast Bernadette in the original role, it sets a certain standard. Although Audra is known for being a powerhouse soprano, she certainly has the pipes for this mezzo role. And just think what she would do with the rap in the prologue. IT WOULD BE EPIC. If you don’t know, Audra is a Broadway legend (I’m not just saying that) known best for her work in Ragtime, A Raisin in the Sun, and Porgy and Bess. Outside the theatre world, she’s best known for playing Dr. Naomi Bennett in Private Practice (I know, a world exists outside the theatre world. Who knew?). But really, Audra would be stellar. Just imagine her singing Stay With Me and Children Will Listen in the Finale. Admit it, you’re already crying. It’s okay, I am too. THIS IS A SAFE SPACE. BUT REALLY LISTEN TO HER.

Cinderella’s Prince – Aaron Tveit

Image

You knew this was coming. Just picture THIS GORGEOUS FACE all spiffed up in a Prince’s outfit. You’re picturing it, aren’t you? Oh dude you’re drooling a little bit. IT’S OKAY WE ALL ARE. Because really, this man is just. I can’t even express how wonderful and talented he is. With arguably one of the best voices in the theatre world today (this is my opinion, but I really think this is everyone’s opinion), Aaron Tveit has played pretty much every hot-guy-leading-man role on Broadway. Link Larkin in Hairspray, Fiyero in Wicked… and then he originated the role of Gabe in Next to Normal and Frank in Catch Me If You Can. AND THEN he went on to play Enjolras in the movie adaptation of Les Mis, where I honestly think he stole the show everytime he opened his mouth and started singing with that magical voice of his. It helps that he’s not hard to look at, and he’s an incredible actor. Those outside theatre know him best as playing Trip in Gossip Girl. Seriously though, I think Aaron would capture the essence of Cinderella’s Prince perfectly. It would be the best thing ever. Cinderella’s Prince is an awesome character, because he’s just such a douche. I think Aaron would be able to do it well but add some charm, so that he becomes the character that you hate but also you love and you’re attracted to even though you don’t want to be. Plus he gets a little bit more screentime than Rapunzel’s Prince so…. yeah…. Seriously though, watch this video and tell me you aren’t feeling even a little bit sexually frustrated. Yeah, I thought so.

Rapunzel’s Prince – Stark Sands/Colin Donnell

Image       Colin+Donnell+2012+iHeartRadio+Music+Festival+LGCRmZgFUlzl

Okay first of all, LOOK AT STARK SANDS (left). Look at that and tell me you don’t see the resemblance between him and Josh Dallas, who plays Prince Charming on Once Upon a Time. It’s insane. So clearly, Stark is meant to play a prince. It’s fate. Plus, that voice? DAYUM. And imagine little Stark (yeah okay he’s technically older than Aaron but WHATEVER) playing Aaron’s little brother and them singing Agony together. PERFECTION. Their voices together actually might be too much for me to handle. Stark is best known for his roles in American Idiot and Kinky Boots (currently playing, I am DYING to see it) on Broadway. His voice is absolutely killer. And then there’s Colin Donnell. With that dark hair and blue eyes and dreamy voice… he’s basically a real life Disney prince. The only drawback with him is that he and Santino Fontana are kind of similar, and that might get a bit confusing. But still. That silky, smooth, wonderful voice. I mean, come on.

Voice-wise, I would say Colin is stronger for the part, just because he has more of a “princely” voice while Stark’s voice is a little more modern/contemporary, but appearance-wise and just personal preference-wise, I’m a little bit more in favor of Stark.

Okay it’s another duet with Laura Osnes. It’s clear how much I love her. Further proof that she’s a REAL ANGEL. But LOOK AT HOW WONDERFUL COLIN IS.

Cinderella’s Stepmother – Christine Baranski

Image

Yeah, okay, we kept one casting decision from the movie. You just can’t argue with Christine Baranski. You just can’t. Literally the most perfect casting in the history of everything. Except maybe young Professor X and Magneto in X-Men: First Class. But that’s for another time and place. Christine Baranski is best known in the theatre world for her roles in Rumors, The Real Thing, and Lips Together, Teeth Apart. She’s also well known for her roles in the film adaptation of Mamma Mia and her Emmy Award-winning role on The Good Wife. I think Christine would be absolutely hysterical as Cinderella’s Stepmother, and there is no one in the world that can argue with that.

Skip to 4:40 if you don’t want dialogue. The conclusion here is that Christine Baranski is flawless.

And if you’re not convinced of her acting abilities and how she would play Cinderella’s Stepmother, see this link. She’s fabulous. A+ comedic timing.

Jack’s Mother – Allison Janney

600full-allison-janney

Okay, one more coinciding with the movie. I don’t know if Allison Janney has officially been cast in the film, but she read for Jack’s Mother in the 2012 reading of the film’s screenplay. Jack’s Mother is a really hilarious, albeit a teeny bit annoying, character, and Allison would do it flawlessly. Just picturing her running in screaming about a giant in the second act is getting me seriously excited. I really hope they do cast her in the film.

Skip to 2:27 for Allison’s solo. But the whole number is spectacular. I wish I had had a chance to see 9 to 5 when it was on Broadway. Also, this features Megan Hilty (who we’ll talk about later), Broadway and TV goddess.

Narrator/Mysterious Man – Norbert Leo Butz

Image

Following suit with the original Broadway production, combining the roles of the Narrator and the Mysterious Man makes it obvious that the only man that could do it is Norbert Leo Butz. First of all, his voice is incredible. He was the original Fiyero in Wicked. Need I say more? Wait, yes, I do need to, I HAVE SO MUCH TO SAY. Just picture him singing No More with Santino. Oh god, that would be gorgeous. I would pay so much money to see that. Plus, Norbert just has that great narrator voice that would really keep you engaged in the story throughout.

Yeah, his voice is the one you’re listening to when you listen to the Wicked original soundtrack. He’s amazing. It’s no wonder Elphaba and Glinda and everyone else at Shiz was in love with him. Plus, those tight pants? Dayummmmmmm.

Lucinda & Florinda – Jane Krakowski & Megan Hilty

Image      Image

Okay literally, no one could do this job better than these two. Individually, they are both fabulous women and Broadway goddesses. Together, as Cinderella’s obnoxious stepsisters? Oh god, they would be unstoppable. You’d find yourself siding with them over Cinderella. Okay maybe not, because you can’t hate Laura Osnes, it’s physically impossible. But still. These two powerhouses would be incredible, and you can’t deny it. Jane is most well known for playing Jenna on 30 Rock (probably one of my favorite TV characters ever, behind Christ Traeger from Parks and Rec). Her theatre credits include the Broadway revival of Nine (which now has a HORRIBLE rep thanks to that movie adaptation that came out in 2009, but Jane won the Tony for that role SO THERE) and Guys and Dolls as Miss Adelaide on West End. Her voice is spectacular. Megan Hilty, along with having the most amazing body on the face of the earth (seriously, every week watching Smash I was so jealous), has the most gorgeous, powerful voice I’ve heard in a long time. As I just mentioned, most people know Megan Hilty for her role as Ivy Lynn on Smash (one of the saddest losses in television as of late. I’m still praying it’ll magically come back somehow), and she also played Glinda in Wicked on Broadway and starred in 9 to 5 with Allison Janney.

Look at this hottie. Tony Award winning performance by Jane Krakowski, ladies and gentlemen.

I had some serious issues picking out JUST ONE song for Megan, just because I’m obsessed with her and every song she does is flawless (I’m serious, look up ANYTHING she’s done. You will find no flaws.), but I finally settled on this song from Smash. ENJOY, MY PRETTIES.

OKAY SORRY I COULDN’T JUST DO ONE. SHE’S JUST TOO GOOD. Literally every time I watch this I get chills. Every. Time.

The Prince’s Steward – James Corden

James-Corden-008

Okay don’t get me wrong. I love James Corden. I knew him first from Doctor Who, and he was adorable and hilarious there. I absolutely love him. But when I heard he was cast as The Baker I was pretty skeptical. I love him so much though, and I would like to keep him in the cast. So Nathalie and I settled on casting him as the Prince’s Steward. He gets plenty of lines, and I know for a fact that James Corden would be hilarious in this role. The Prince’s Steward is such a little weasel, and James Corden would do it so well while somehow being endearing at the same time. It would be wonderful. James is most well known for his theatre work in The History Boys and One Man, Two Guvnors. Most people on the internet, however, know him as Craig Owens from Doctor Who. His voice is stunning, also. Why is everyone in this industry so multi-talented? It’s infuriating. He’s just such a cutie.

The Giant – Emma Thompson

Image

Okay, you probably think this is weird. But since The Giant is nothing but a disembodied voice in most productions of Into the Woods, Nathalie and I thought, why not get someone super famous and awesome? I personally was thinking Morgan Freeman, but people might get confused and think God is in Into the Woods. Emma Thompson would be super epic though. She’s got a great voice, and she’s just so wonderful. It’s just a shame though, that no one would see her gorgeous face. It’s hard to pin down what Emma is best known for, because she’s been in EVERYTHING. She will always stick in my mind for her roles in Love Actually and as Professor Trelawney in the Harry Potter movies. Sorry y’all, I’m only 19. She was also amazing in Sense and Sensibility. But if I list every single thing she’s been in we’ll be here for a while. Although, we already have been here for a while because I DON’T KNOW HOW TO BE SUCCINCT ABOUT MY THOUGHTS OOPS. Also, why are all the gorgeous, incredibly talented, wonderful actresses out there named Emma? Thompson, Stone, Watson, Roberts. I want to be all of them. Please and thank you.

Here’s a clip of Emma as Professor Trelawney in The Prisoner of Azkaban just because she’s hilarious and the most adorable thing. Really though, listen to that voice. Imagine it REALLY LOUD AND ANGRY AS A SCARY GIANT. IT WOULD BE SO COOL. Also, side note: LOOK AT HOW YOUNG THE WHOLE CAST LOOKS. BABY DAN AND EMMA AND RUPERT.

Cinderella’s Mother – Sherie Rene Scott

1.163717

It’s a shame that Cinderella’s Mother really only has two scenes in the whole show, but nevertheless, she’s a really important role and needs to have some serious pipes. Sherie Rene Scott, best known for her roles in The Last Five Years, Grease, Aida, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, is one of my favorite Broadway leading ladies. She has a seriously amazing voice, and is an incredible actress. I see her being all motherly and giving advice to Laura Osnes, it would just be so wonderful.

Here’s Sherie in one of my favorite (also the original) renditions of Still Hurting from The Last Five Years.

Cinderella’s Father – Joel Grey

Image

This one I’m still not 100% sure about. Nathalie and I were mostly trying to think of Broadway guys in the age group that Cinderella’s Father should be in, and we came up with very little. Either way, having Joel Grey in anything makes it automatically awesome. Joel Grey is best known for playing the Master of Ceremonies in Cabaret, and the Wizard in Wickedas well as Moonface Martin in the 2011 revival of Anything Goes. He’s basically a legend. He just seems so sweet and adorable to me (although I guess the Wizard in Wicked is kind of a misunderstood douchebag), so seeing him switch it up a little and be a total drunk jerk as Cinderella’s Father would be really fun to watch.

The Wolf – Cheyenne Jackson

Image

Cheyenne Jackson is one of my all-time favorite performers. Not only is he crazy good-looking, his voice is insanely good. One of my favorite TV moments was when he showed up in 30 Rock and totally showed up Jane Krakowski’s character. The two of them together was like magic. Cheyenne Jackson as The Wolf would just be so good I can’t even comprehend it. I can easily picture him doing the creepiness, but still managing to somehow be lovable at the same time. Cheyenne is most well known for his roles in Thoroughly Modern Millie, All Shook Up, Damn Yankees, and Xanadu. He also had a brief guest spot in Glee, and he didn’t sing AT ALL (literally one of the biggest crimes Glee has ever committed was having Cheyenne Jackson on the show for multiple episodes and not sing). Side note: he kind of reminds me of a more fabulous, musical, less wolf-like, older version of Tyler Hoechlin. SHOUT OUT TO TEEN WOLF FANS WOOOOO (See here for reference: http://images5.fanpop.com/image/photos/31200000/tyler-hoechlin-tyler-hoechlin-31264797-1280-1024.jpg)

This man is flawless.

Also, I just realized Cheyenne has also worked with Laura Osnes. LAURA HAS WORKED WITH ALL THE MEN IN THE BROADWAY COMMUNITY I SWEAR TO GOD. SHE’S THAT GOOD.

Rapunzel – Sierra Boggess

Image

Yes, I see that she’s a redhead. But hey, she’s gone blonde for a role before (Fantine in West End’s Les Mis). She’s got a stunning soprano voice, which is what’s needed for Rapunzel. Imagine her gorgeous voice floating through the set (I keep wanting to say stage, DAMN YOU THEATRE BRAIN) while filming Agony. Just. It would be so. Beautiful. Sierra made her Broadway debut as Ariel in the musical adaptation of The Little Mermaid, and has performed as Fantine in Les Mis, and Christine in The Phantom of the Opera. I also have a feeling, with her theatre experience, that she has the acting chops to do Act Two PTSD-Rapunzel. It would be amazing.

Sierra as Ariel is PERFECTION.

And if you’re not convinced of her super soprano abilities (and infinite beauty):

Grandmother – Victoria Clark

Image

She’s not exactly grandmother-age, but with the magic of Hollywood, it would totally be believable. Plus, she would be hilarious. Even though Little Red’s Grandmother isn’t a huge role, her featured scenes require someone with great comedic timing and some serious acting ability (just ask the Tony nominators about that one). Take a look at how cute she is.

Snow White & Sleeping Beauty – Cristin Milioti & Annaleigh Ashford

Image         Image

Two of my favorite Broadway actresses, and I couldn’t find principal roles for them in the show! So two cameos at the end of the show will have to do. Cristin Milioti and Annaleigh Ashford are two enormous talent from the Broadway community, and they’re both just SO ADORABLE. Cristin is best known for her work in Once, and she will now be and even more recognizable face, since she’s been cast as the Mother on the final season of How I Met Your Mother (cue the tears I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S ENDING). She would be adorable in a cameo role as Snow White, plus she’s got the dark hair and pale skin to pull it off. Annaleigh Ashford is best known for her roles in Hair, Wicked, Legally Blonde, and Kinky Boots. Annaleigh has the gorgeous long blonde hair and just the right look for Sleeping Beauty, and I would love to have her in the film no matter what.

Check out the Broadway cast doing Falling Slowly from Once with Cristin. Try not to cry. IT’S REALLY HARD.

Annaleigh is a beast. Her stage presence is staggering, and I’m in love with her voice.

OKAY THAT’S ALL. I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THIS DREAM MOVIE CASTING.

Summer 2013 (Part 1): Listen Up Tour

So, now comes the part where I use this blog as a chronicle of my life – mostly so I don’t forget all these details in the future. In other words, forgive my rambling. Alright, here we go. Here’s the story of how I met Darren Criss. Mostly for my own benefit.

Image

Ok sorry. So, here’s how it happened, from the beginning. My friend Katie and I both had VIP tickets to Darren Criss’ San Francisco show, the kickoff show for his national tour, Listen Up. The VIP package we paid for included priority entrance into the venue, a poster, a VIP lanyard, and a meet and green with a professional photograph. This was all incredibly exciting for me in particular, because not only was I just getting used to the concept of being able to see my favorite performers live in concert — growing up in Hong Kong, there were barely ever any opportunities to see concerts unless they were Cantonese pop stars, and even then, most concerts were a boat ride away in Macau — but also because I had never been VIP for anything. Ever. In my life. Ever. And the fact that I had a VIP ticket for the concert with my favorite performer/celebrity, a person I have admired and loved for probably around four years now, was too surreal for me to even comprehend.

In the weeks leading up to the concert, I kept telling myself how excited I was. Truthfully though, it hadn’t properly sunk in that I was not only going to get to see Darren Criss perform new and old songs live, right in front of me, but I was also going to get the chance to meet him, and tell him in a sentence or two how much his music and his love for the arts has truly affected and inspired me. I don’t think I can fully express how much Darren Criss as a performer means to me – the first time I watched A Very Potter Musical (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmwM_AKeMCk&list=PLC76BE906C9D83A3A <— TRUST ME. WATCH IT. NOW.) in the summer of 2010, it only took me about 30 seconds to fall in love with this adorable half-Asian college kid with a ‘fro singing his heart out about Harry Potter and life  at Hogwarts. And then I find out that this amazing guy also wrote the music for the show. Needless to say, I was in love. Watching this guy, and the rest of his incredible group of friends from college, grow into what they are today (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StarKid_Productions) was so inspiring, and the content they created together is something I will never forget. It is now and forever an integral part of my high school and college life, and how I view the arts.

And then, in September of 2o10, I heard that my favorite afrotastic guy had just been cast on Glee, which was my favorite show at the time (don’t get me started with how I feel about it now). And yes, I did go all the way back in the archives of JustJared just to find this: http://www.justjared.com/2010/09/26/darren-criss-glees-newest-star/

Watching him grow as an actor, and seeing how many people were beginning to love him, and watching him grow as a star in the industry, was so incredible knowing his roots.

934048_10201124980983657_1488041686_n

Anyway, back to the actual story. So my friend Katie and I had VIP tickets to his show, but when we originally bought the tickets, we both bought an extra general admission ticket for our mothers, with the plan of making it a mother-daughter concert extravaganza. It only makes sense that such dedicated fangirls such as myself and Katie would have mothers just as excited as us about going to a Darren Criss concert. But because of many other circumstances, the awesome mother-daughter trip fell through, and Katie and I were left with two extra tickets. We ended up selling them to two of Katie’s friends in the area, so when we went to the concert, we stood in the general admission line with them, arriving hours early. A mom came by and offered everyone in line a handful of Red Vines from the giant bucket of licorice in her arms. Classic. Liam White, the Starkid video director, walked by. And as we waited in line around the block from the venue, next to a combined Taco Bell/KFC (just imagine the smell. Imagine it.), we noticed a group maybe twenty feet in front of us cheering like maniacs, looking towards the street in front of them. We realized about 10 seconds too late that Darren had just driven by in a car with his mom. What? I’m sorry, what?? So that was the first surreal thing to happen of the day, waiting in line by Taco Bell/KFC.

What we didn’t realize, though, was that there was already a separate VIP line forming closer to the entrance. So when it came closer to the time that we were supposed to check in as VIPs, we went up to the front to find an already crazy-long line of VIPs. It seemed like the end of the world then, what with a huge amount of people in front of us more than an hour before the show. So much for priority entrance.

And as we stood in the VIP line, we saw Liam White again, moving slowly along the line with his camera, asking each person, “Glee or Starkid?” Katie and I looked at each other, and without even having to ask each other, we knew what to say. We agreed to answer wholeheartedly, to show our full love and support for our choice. Liam came right up to us, and asked the same question. “STARKID!” We screamed, grinning at Liam. Another surreal experience.

Standing in line, we got to talking to a woman behind us and her daughter, who looked to be about 14. We chatted about the line, and the venue, and what would be happening during the concert. We told them we were in college, and we were very excited to see the show. Soon, the line was moving and we moved a bit away from the woman and her daughter. We weren’t too far to hear what they were saying, though. “See, honey? Those are the kinds of girls you should try to grow up to be. Respectful, kind, friendly.” I felt a smile tugging at the corners of my mouth and elbowed Katie, repeating the woman’s kind words. Even with the rest of the events that night, that was one of my favorite memories from the day.

Before we knew it, the line was moving and we were walking into the venue. On the drive over from San Jose, where Katie lives, I thought I would be super clever and avoid hunger by packing a giant ziplock bag of cereal. Lucky me, because at the door they were checking for outside food. I was stopped and asked to toss the bag, so Katie moved ahead as me as I threw the bag into the can behind me and raced up the stairs to catch up. Now that we were in, it was free for all. And now I feel like I’m writing The Hunger Games. Which I guess it pretty much was.

So we dash through the doors and see the huge stage, and the beautiful room. I have to say, The Fillmore is one of my all time favorite concert venues I have ever been to. You can almost feel the years and years of history, and the music just seeping from the walls. It was really amazing to think that Darren Criss was going to be on the stage, like so many other musical legends, performing for us soon.

We got a place in the crowd, maybe 10 or 15 rows back. It could have been better, but we couldn’t really do anything about it at the time. Or at least, Katie thought so. “Trust me,” I told her. “I’m an expert. Just follow me.” As we waited for the opening act to come out, I slowly and subtly inched my way between people in front of me, or used someone pushing me to one side as an advantage to let myself be pushed in front of someone else. It’s all about strategy, I’m telling you. By the time the first opening act came out, an incredible violin duo named Chargaux (combination of the names Charly and Margaux, two super cool chicks from Brooklyn with pink and purple dreads playing contemporary songs on their string instruments), Katie and I were probably 5th row. It wasn’t good enough for me, though, so throughout Chargaux’s set, and even when Theo Katzman came out (the second opening act, and one of my favorite musicians ever), I kept inching. And then, by the time Darren’s band started to come out, one by one, I was dead center, 2nd row. That’s right. Bow down to me, you are not worthy.

Image

Darren’s set started with each band member stepping out, drummer first, and starting to play. It sounded to me like the score to a movie, and I just remember thinking, Classic Darren, waiting until the very last second to come running out to the soundtrack of an epic movie. He came sprinting out, and everyone (including me) went ballistic. Like the rockstar he really is, he picked up an electric guitar and  came up the mic, and launched into the Circle of Life. CLASSIC. DARREN. It was glorious. Darren Criss, singing the Elton John song that defined all of our childhoods. It was really at that point that it sunk in. I was here, in San Francisco. Darren’s home town. Watching Darren Criss, my favorite performer in the history of ever, perform live in front of me, singing songs I listened to over and over again on my ipod, and debuting new songs for me to obsess over, and learn all the lyrics to.

Next, Darren immediately launched into I Still Think, an old classic of his from like 2007. Every single person around me sang a long, not missing a word. Next, he went to his keyboard and sang us a new song, called Any of Those Things – he introduced it by describing a situation when someone you’ve broken up with gets with someone new. I liked it immediately; the style was something totally unexpected, a totally new Darren. This was upbeat, poppy, one of those jump-up-and-down songs that you want to jam out to. His words were simple, beautiful, and relatable, as they always are. He then toned things down – the band went offstage, and he sat on a stool all the way downstage, just him and his acoustic guitar. Fittingly, he sang Human, a song from his first EP. He told he that he wrote it when he was probably 16 years old, and when he started, right on queue, every single member of the audience was singing along, word for word. The look of complete content on his face throughout the number made me so happy. Imagine yourself as a 16 year old kid, writing a song about life in your bedroom just because you love music and you’re dreaming about being a star one day. It’s mind blowing to me, and probably to him as well, that now he’s this huge star, on a national tour, with thousands of screaming fans singing along to something he wrote when he was 16. I can’t imagine that there’s a better feeling than having an audience sing along to a song that you wrote and put your soul into.

Then Darren got up, also with his acoustic guitar, and sang Sami, the basis of Harry from AVPM, with the whole audience collectively swooning. Next, Darren debuted another new song, called Picture Perfect. It was totally a different style, again, but showed some serious musical composition chops. It didn’t surprise me at all when I found out later that Darren co-wrote the song with two of my other favorite musicians, Theo Katzman and Joey Dosik. That’s not to discount Darren’s composition skills at all, just to clarify. And then, in the middle of the song, Darren surprised us all: during an instrumental break, he walked to the edge of the stage and pointed at the girl directly in front of me, saying, “Come on up here!” The girl clambered over the barrier in disbelief, with the help of the security guys surrounding the stage. Darren pulled her up and asked her name (“Susan!”), before sitting her down on the piano bench next to her, stating that she was looking “pretty fine tonight,” and serenading Susan for the rest of the song. The entire audience was basically having a heart attack by that point, including me. Fortunately, when Susan was pulled up from her 1st row dead center spot, I moved in. Yup. Ok, maybe, it sucked that I was one person away from being the one that was pulled up, but I spent the rest of the concert in the front row right against the front barricade. Pretty awesome, yup.

Darren then launched into the unofficial Starkid anthem, Not Alone. It was as stunning as I always pictured it, and Darren sung his heart out. Darren took a break then, and talked to all of us collectively as the city of San Francisco, his hometown. He told us what an honor it was for him to play The Fillmore, having grown up seeing shows there, and how much he loved growing up in San Francisco. He then launched into his own rendition of I Left My Heart in San Francisco. I’m not even from San Francisco, and I had tears in my eyes. His love and gratitude and humility just radiated from the stage.

He debuted another new song, called Words. It was definitely one of my favorites – the chorus was very Otis Redding-esque, and it was just glorious. The lyrics were absolutely beautiful, albeit ironic; the theme of the song was that he couldn’t find the words to tell a girl he loves her, while simultaneously making everyone in the audience fall in love with him all over again (SO MANY PRONOUNS IN THAT SENTENCE I’M SO SORRY IF IT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE). Then, Darren brought his older brother Chuck out, who was adorably shy in comparison with his younger rockstar brother. They sat on stools side by side, with an acoustic guitar each. Darren talked about how they always used to sing this next song together in their house, just two brothers with guitars. They dedicated the song to their father, who was up in the box with their mom, and the audience collectively awww’ed. It was just heartmelting. They sang Two of Us by the Beatles, and it was gorgeous. Simple, humbling, and beautiful. Just two brothers making music together.

Darren then took a break to talk to the audience about the importance of lyrical integrity, and how the words in a song are so important and how they can really move a person. Needless to say, everyone in the room had an intellectual boner based on the amount of big words he had used. He then transitioned into singing Don’t You, another song off of his original EP, and one of my personal favorites. Who else besides Darren Criss can include “a propos” in their lyrics for a song and make it so seamless and effortless? There was no band, but Theo and Joe Dart stood in the background, singing soft harmonies. It was gorgeous.

Darren then debuted one of my favorites of his new songs, Pheromones. I have no doubt that when his album officially comes out, Pheromones will be at the top of the charts. It just has a Top 40 style to it – so incredibly catchy, and the lyrics are so clever. Then Darren played his final new song, called Once Upon a Time. Sitting at his keyboard, he introduced it by talking about being happy with the present, but longing for the beginning, and how some of the best times of his life were past him, but he was so excited for what was coming next. I felt myself tearing up yet again, along with everyone else, as he started the song.

He came back for the encore, and sang Teenage Dream on the keyboard. It was gorgeous, but people around me were not being respectful. Screaming their heads off throughout the song, because omigod klaine omigod gleeeee omigodddddd. It was too much for me, but I tried to block it all out and just enjoy the music being made. Finally, Darren closed with the reprise of Circle of Life, the goofy, dorky guy that he is, and it was wonderful and perfect.

Afterwards, the VIPs went upstairs into a room whose walls were plastered with album covers of musicians past. I felt like I was in a musical history museum; it was surreal. As we were waiting, Liam White came around and interviewed a few people on their experiences during the concert. During one particular interview, the whole room went kind of quiet to listen. A boy, probably 17 or 18 years old, was gushing about the show, and what an inspiration Darren had been to him. He told the camera that Somewhere Only We Know was the very first song he ever performed in front of people, inspired by Darren’s performance on Glee. The whole room burst into applause when he finished speaking, and it was just so heartwarming. When we were all waiting, Theo Katzman came in and hung out with us – he was sweet, and very humble. I told him how incredible he was, and that I had seen him perform a few months ago in LA, and how I wished he had done a few of his other songs from his album. He was very grateful, and very nice. It was so great to talk to such an amazing musician that I really admire.

Finally, when the VIP Deluxe people were done (they got more time to talk to Darren, and got both a professional photo and a Polaroid photo to take home), we started to file in one by one. I had already thought beforehand about what I was going to say, but I was still nervous. I was about to meet one of my real-life heroes, one of my all-time favorite people. When it was finally my turn, I went straight in for a hug, shamelessly. He grinned and hugged me back, going, “Wow, you’re just going straight for it!” I replied, “Yup! Hi, I’m Victoria.” We shook hands, and he squeezed mine warmly, while holding my eye contact and smiling. “Nice to meet you Victoria, I’m Darren!” Before the photo was taken, I said to him, knowing I didn’t have much time, “Listen, I just wanted to say, it’s such an honor to meet you. You’re such inspiration to me, and such an incredible performer. Once Upon a Time was one of my favorites, it moved me to tears.” His grin grew wider and he replied, “Thank you so much, that means so much to me. That’s very sweet of you to say!” He put his arm around me and turned to the camera, and I reciprocated. Before the flash went off, he said, “You look really cute, by the way! Very fashionable!” I managed a very flustered “thanks” in reply before saying goodbye (he held my eye contact the whole time, saying goodbye, smiling and waving before turning to the next person) and floating away on a cloud. I got my VIP swag and jumped ecstatically up and down with Katie for about five minutes. It really, really was one of the best nights of my life.

Start of Something New (cue karaoke High School Musical track)!

So… I guess I finally caved and started a blog. I don’t know, growing up I always saw blogs as kind of an online diary, and I was never really the type that kept a diary. I definitely tried a couple times and then gave up after a week or so, because the task of writing about my thought’s on the day’s events was not all that interesting to me. When I was a kid, I was convinced that I was this crazy talented writer that was meant to be an award-winning novelist, the next JK Rowling. It soon became apparent that my stories about talking dolphins and long lost twin sisters meeting to interview for the same job (a shameless ripoff of The Challenge with Mary Kate and Ashley) would, in fact, not become New York Times Bestsellers and that my writing wasn’t all that extraordinary.

I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I definitely did lose my love of writing in during high school; what with having the dreaded five-paragraph essay pounded into my head by all of my teachers, and all of the constant essay writing on topics I didn’t enjoy, it only makes sense that I didn’t really enjoy writing in high school. I did join the school newspaper/literary magazine, but to be honest, I really only did it because my older brother did, and he was the king of writing when he was in high school. It just seemed  to me that everyone expected me to be a great writer too, and I kind of expected it of myself. I liked writing articles in the beginning, but I realized that nothing I was writing really mattered – I wrote little synopses of upcoming movies, or an article on the latest Flash computer game fad in school. So I stopped enjoying it, and by senior year, I became lazy – I stopped writing articles as frequently, I missed staff meetings, and by graduation I didn’t even really feel like I was a part of it at all.

But now I’ve finished my first year of college. I’m not going to pretend that my one year of college experience has made me so much wiser, or anything of the sort – I definitely still have a lot to learn. But college has reignited my love for writing, or at least a yearn to write just because I love it. My professors this year let me write about things I cared about, and I had fun writing papers. Coming out of the schooling I did, it was such a novel concept to have fun doing an assignment; the only thing that mattered in the end was the end product, and the grade I received. But this year, I got to write a research paper on canceled TV shows, focusing on Arrested Development, and another research paper on race and gender representations in the 2007 movie adaptation of Hairspray. My words just came so easily and naturally to me, and it felt like it did before. That’s what I’m hoping this blog will be for me – a medium for me to flesh out my thoughts, and rediscover what I used to love about writing. But now I’m getting sappy. I’ll insert one of my favorite lines from one of my favorite TV shows to lighten the mood. You’re welcome, world (not that anyone is reading this besides.. oh wait, no one is reading this).

Also, apologies in advance – this blog will probably become a multipurpose blog – I’ll use it to vent with words, but I’ll be honest, I’ve always secretly wanted to jump on the bandwagon (feel free to judge me right now, I’m judging myself) and start a fashion blog (I KNOW OK?). Also, because I have a feeling this summer is going to be pretty uneventful, I’m thinking of starting a music youtube channel, so there also might be thoughts about music and/or some videos with music on here. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
